‘The GOP must stop playing games with people’s lives’
MADISON – Today, Democratic members on the legislature’s Joint Committee on Finance called for an
immediate hearing on the Walker Administration’s plan to dismantle affordable health care in Wisconsin.
In a letter to the Committee’s co-chairs, Rep. Tamara Grigsby (D-Milwaukee) and Rep. Cory Mason (DRacine)
urged Republicans to convene the Committee convene immediately in order to scrutinize the plan
submitted this week by Wisconsin’s Department of Health Services (DHS).
“Attacking everyday people has become business as usual for the Walker Administration,” said Rep.
Grigsby. “How could anyone propose a plan that so clearly attacks health care in Wisconsin? The GOP
must stop playing games with people’s lives.”
Until now, DHS has released limited information about its health care cutting plan. The nearly 300-page
document submitted to the Committee late yesterday afternoon provides the first details on the plan the
Department intends to submit to the federal government for approval.
“This plan is filled with even more of the bad choices Republicans have been making all year,” said Rep.
Mason. “The Walker Administration has made a very conscious choice to deny health care to tens of
thousands of Wisconsin residents to pay for tax breaks to special interests and corporations.”
The objection letter submitted by Representatives Grigsby and Mason also requests that the Committee’s
co-chairs ensure that DHS Secretary Dennis Smith comes before the Committee to answer members’
questions about the proposed plan to cut health care for Wisconsin families.
